The Microstructural Features of the Diffusion-Simulated Connectivity (DiSCo) Dataset

We present a detailed description of the structural characteristics MICCAI 2021 Diffusion Simulated Connectivity (DiSCo) Challenge synthetic dataset. The DiSCo dataset are one kind numerical phantoms for simulation diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) via Monte-Carlo diffusion simulations. microscopic and macroscopic complexity substrates allows evaluation processing pipelines estimation quantitative connectivity. signal in each voxel DWIs is obtained from simulations particle dynamics within substrate an unprecedented size 1 mm\(^3\), allowing image matrix up to \(40\times 40\times 40\) voxels (isotropic sizes 25 \(\upmu \)m). In this paper, we provide characterization microstructural properties dataset, which composed three with comparable microstructure. report ground-truth tissue volume fractions (“intra-axonal”, “extra-axonal”, “myelin”), fibre density, bundle density orientation distributions (FODs). believe that will be beneficial validating connectivity pipelines, could eventually find use modelling based on machine learning approaches.
